Our Dual Citizenship within Time and Space

One Bible passage that I always thought was particularly interesting is Ephesians 2:5-6, which states…

Ephesians 2:5-6 NKJV: 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

Many times, when this is interpreted, it is taught that Jesus sees us as if we are already seated with Him. But is this what the text actually says? The text teaches this principal in past tense, portraying the fact that this has already happened. When we were dead, He made us alive together with Christ, and raised us up, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. This is all past tense. If we have accepted Jesus as our Savior, this is already done. What exactly does that mean for us?

This is usually looked at as a nice metaphor or a clever way to explain a certain principal, but I tend to believe when we see things like that, there is usually a deeper truth. I believe this passage is more literal than we might originally think. With a passage such as this, it is easy to read and gloss over without really considering the meaning of the text. When we look at it closer, however, we realize that very direct and literal language is used. We do not see as if or like anywhere in the passage. It is directly saying that a literal event occurred when you and I accepted Jesus as our Savior. We were literally seated in Heaven with Jesus.

The Greek word used for the idea of us being raised together comes from synegeirō”, meaning “1. to raise together, to cause to raise together 2. to raise up together from mortal death to a new and blessed life dedicated to God”. 1 From this, we can realize that we were, in a sense, born into death, but since we accepted Jesus’ gift of salvation, we have been raised and seated in Heaven. Also notice that this happened to all of us together, implicating that it happened at the same time.

What we are dealing with here is the same event in two dimensions. Biblically speaking, parallel dimensions absolutely do exist. Instead of there being an infinite number, however, there are at least two, possibly three or four. At the very least, there is the physical dimension and the spiritual dimension. The possible third dimension is if the spiritual dimension is actually split up into two; essentially Heaven above and Hell below. There also exists the possibility of the second heaven being its own dimension, though I see this more as an in between state of sorts. We do, however, know for sure that there are at least two. The physical and spiritual dimensions are what Ephesians 2:5-6 is dealing with.

In the physical dimension, on Earth, we accept Jesus as our Savior and begin our new life. In the spiritual dimension, in Heaven, it is something far more profound than we realize. This goes back to the idea I discussed in my book Disclosure about how time operates much differently in Heaven. For those who are not familiar with my book, here is a quick review.

Every physical thing is stuck within the confines of time. Because of this, time is a constant. An hour is always an hour and there is no natural way to alter it. The spiritual dimension, however, is different. Time is more fluid there. God, in essence, is outside of time. He can manipulate time as He sees fit (such as to allow John to feel the passage of about half an hour’s time during his vision in Revelation 8), but God Himself is outside of time. He would have to be. If He weren’t, if God was stuck in time with the rest of us, it would mean there was a power or force higher than God Himself, and such a thing is Biblically impossible. Time is just another one of God’s creations.

How this applies to Ephesians 2:5-6 is quite interesting. What this means is we, all Christians on Earth, are already in Heaven. Right now, as you are reading this, if you are secure in Jesus, you are already seated with Jesus in Heaven. Now of course, this is something that is occurring in the spiritual dimension. This is something outside of the timeline. We cannot apply this to our physical lives and think we can do whatever we want because in Heaven it is already done. That is not at all what I am suggesting. If anything, it should prove the exact opposite.

We started off this life dead in our sins. If we were to continue down that path and never accept Jesus, we would be dead already, even though we would still be physically alive. That is what the beginning of this passage in Ephesians is signifying. Accepting Jesus takes us out of that spiritual state of death and raises us to life with and in Jesus Christ. Even if we could do it and remain in eternal life, we should not want to return to the same sinful life that was keeping us in a state of perpetual death.

I am also not suggesting that we existed in Heaven before we were born. There are many problems with that theory. First, for there to be a before, there would have to be time. That does not work in the spiritual dimension. There is no before. There is no after. There just is. Now again, God can manipulate time as He sees fit. But for us, as physical humans, we do not have access to this while in physical existence. When we shed our physicality and we are on the other side, then we can experience that sort of timelessness. But as far as on this side of the veil, we can’t. Also, we were born into a sinful world into sinful bodies. Our physical and spiritual existence began at the same time. We were not born into eternity. But, when we accepted Jesus, we were lifted into eternity, into timelessness, to be seated with Jesus where we are now. Also consider the fact that when God created Adam, He breathed into him the breath of life, and Adam then became a living soul (Genesis 2:7). This means he was not a living soul beforehand. Adam did not exist in Heaven before he was created on Earth. His physical being and spiritual being were created at the same time, both here on Earth. Such is the same for each one of us.

While this is a difficult thing to contemplate, the Bible makes it clear that when we were saved, we were lifted into Heaven. We are already there. I believe this is how we can be sealed eternally (Ephesians 1:13). I do not see eternity as an expanse of time, but more of a state of existence, almost a type of spiritual location. We are sealed because we are already there. That is why nothing can take us out of God’s hands. With God, it is already done.

What also is interesting is that is says we were raised together. This also adds to the theory of timelessness and us already being there. Because it is outside of time, when I was saved and when you were saved, we were raised together. We were raised together with the apostle Paul when he accepted Jesus as his Savior. While on this side of the veil, we can point to a specific time when we were saved, on the other side, it is all the same and we share in it together.

There are many things that can be considered concerning this. Such as, when John was caught up to Heaven and given his vision of the Revelation, he saw people that would be slain for their testimony in Jesus. When those people are slain in our future, will they see John having his vision roughly 2,000 years ago? There is a theory that states the 24 elders in Revelation were the 12 apostles and 12 sons of Jacob. If this is true, when John saw the elders, did he see himself?

The answer is, I really don’t know. I understand that much of this is theoretical and even speculative. It is an interesting thought concerning, what I consider to be, a Biblical truth. I can’t pretend I have all the answers to how this works. I don’t believe any of us will until we escape this physical existence and can finally realize for ourselves that we were there the whole time.

Take care and God bless,

Josh Peck

This is heart provoking, Thankyou Josh.

  2. Thanks for the post Josh! I believe that when we are dreaming, we are operating in a spiritual realm, where time and space is very elastic. Time within a dream can span for seconds, minutes, hours, days or even cover a period of years. We can change location and time in a moment, and we can be older or younger in the dream than we physically are whilst having the dream. So, maybe we already know exactly what it feels like to exist in ‘eternity’? And maybe that confirms that we are already existing spiritually in eternity?

    • Josh Peck says:

Possibly, that’s an interesting thought as well. Maybe through that, God gives us little glimpses here and there so it’ll be a bit easier to understand when we study it for ourselves. It’s a definite possibility.

  3. Peter D. Goodgame says:

Good post Josh, I think you are on to something! You know, this also relates to our identity as citizens of the eternal city named the New Jerusalem. We read about this eternal city in Revelation 21-22. But Paul also mentions this city in Galatians 4:26 as the Jerusalem of above, “which is the mother of us all.” This is contrasted in Revelation by Babylon the Great, who is the “mother” of all the wicked. The point is that we were actually spiritually birthed in a city which doesn’t manifest in our reality until the future. We are actually time travelers with Jesus! He is the Alpha and the Omega. Our names were written down in the book of life from before the foundation of the world, yet we were birthed out of the eternal city of the future. In Jesus we truly transcend time and space. In Him we can tap into the supernatural realm of signs, wonders, and miracles, and bring a greater reality into our earthly reality. This has something to do with Jesus teaching us to pray, “Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” This is all highly mystical stuff, but we shouldn’t be afraid of it. It is a part of our inheritance as sons and daughters of God!

    • Josh Peck says:

That’s amazing Peter and I couldn’t agree more. You’re absolutely right, we shouldn’t be afraid of it. It is reality. It’s more real than the reality we experience in our physicality every day. We are the shadow, beyond the veil is the original. It is absolutely amazing to think about and most with a traditional Christian upbringing never come across this stuff because, as I said in the blog, it is really easy to read and gloss over a passage like that and just assume its a metaphorical thing. There is so much that we are told is symbolism and it’s really nothing but literal truth and reality. You have some amazing insights into this, thank you so much for commenting and sharing!

This will be a really cool and exciting topic(s) to cover, josh…I’m excited!

  5. Amanda Close says:

Really interesting and something I have wondered myself. God is not bound by time – we are. So therefore can we pray for the past? or is that just silly.

    • Josh Peck says:

I’m not sure if I would consider it silly per se, but I really don’t know how effective it would be. I can’t think of a time in the Bible that someone prayed for something in the past…but then again, if we think about it, if God answered that prayer, how would we ever know it? We do know that God will insert Himself into time to be with us, speak to us, and even sometimes change His mind (such as when He had a conversation about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and also how Moses changed God’s mind about killing everyone at the bottom of the mountain), so there are many interesting things to consider. Good question though, I had not thought of that before! Take care and God bless 🙂
